Sandy Jacobs, a founder of FJG and an expert sailor, can chart a true course. His career began in 1966, when he started working as a full time agent with New England Financial. In 1973, he opened his own office, operating as Wintergreen Associates. When Sandy merged his established insurance practice with that of Mitch Fleischer in 1988, Fleischer Jacobs Group was formed. "When Mitch and I decided to join forces, we wanted to bring together our respective areas of expertise to better support our customers' needs. The synergy created by our joint efforts really helped our firm, and us, to grow professionally."
Sandy and his family moved to Vermont in 1971. " My philosophy is you find out where you can be happy living and then you find out how you can make a living there. For us, Vermont was a good choice." Sandy's wife, Susan, was a teacher in the South Burlington school district for over 30 years and is now retired. Their son, Daniel, is also in the financial services business. A graduate of The University of Vermont, Dan lives and works in Burlington.
An avid boatman for many years, Sandy sails in the summer on Lake Champlain. He holds a Merchant Marine Captain's license and is tugboat operator on the C.L. Churchill- a 1960s vintage tugboat that has been refitted by a group of Vermont volunteers. Home-ported in Burlington, the Churchill assists the replica schooner Lois McClure in her operations and on tour. "Sailing is just a great experience. It's also a great teacher. The knowledge, planning and intuitiveness it requires are skills that have helped me as much in business as they have on a boat."
